Q: Do I have to sign a contract when signing my child up for online math tutoring?
You do not have to sign a contract when you start using my services. When you schedule tutoring sessions for your child, you agree to the policies found here. All of my policies are written to ensure your child gets the most out of their math tutoring experience. If you have any questions or concerns about these policies, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Q: What subjects and grades do you offer tutoring for?
I specialize in online math tutoring for students in Kindergarten through 8th grade, plus Algebra 1. I focus exclusively on mathematics to provide the deepest expertise and most effective evidence-based instruction. This specialization allows me to stay current with the latest math education research and teaching methods for elementary and middle school students. You can learn more about my education background and philosophies here.
Q: How much does tutoring cost?
I use a package system for online math tutoring services. My current packages are:
-
4 sessions for $280 ($70/session)
-
8 sessions for $540 ($67.50/session)
-
12 sessions for $780 ($65/session).
I offer a flex tutoring package of 4 sessions for $320 that can be used whenever you need them instead of on a weekly schedule.
Each package includes 50-60 minute personalized online sessions, customized lesson plans, weekly progress emails, and ongoing support. Larger packages offer better per-session rates, making them ideal for families committed to long-term math confidence building.
I accept the Idaho Empowering Parents grant, the New Hampshire Education Freedom funds, and Arizona Empowerment Scholarship Account funds to help more families access quality online math tutoring.
Q: My child might need help with their homework- how do you do that online?
Homework help is a practical way for me to see how your child is doing with the concepts they’re learning in class. Most families appreciate having my support during homework so it doesn't become a battle at home.
Most families text or email pictures of their homework assignments directly to me before their online math tutoring session. I then bring the image up during our session and share it on my screen so that we can both see it. This makes it easy to discuss the material and collaboratively write calculations and notes. If your child is assigned schoolwork online, they’re able to share their screen with me to show me what they’re working on and get help with the math material.
Q: What equipment does my child need for online tutoring?
Your child will need a laptop or desktop computer with a functional camera and microphone for online math tutoring. I require laptops rather than tablets or phones because interactive math tools require screen control capabilities. Your child will also need a mouse (not a trackpad) to easily move digital math manipulatives and write on the shared screen during sessions. Headphones with a built-in microphone are recommended for clearer audio and to minimize background noise distractions. Most families find they already have all necessary equipment at home. I use Zoom for all tutoring sessions, which is free to download and works on both Mac and PC computers.
Q: why online tutoring?
I’ve found that online tutoring is a great option for busy families. Your child can receive math instruction at home, cutting down on commute time and freeing you up as they receive the help they need! Setting up online tutoring is easy, and most students can handle logging on with minimal help after the first few sessions. With all the available tools online, your child's tutoring session will always be infused with engaging learning materials.
Q: can i drop into my child's online tutoring session?
Absolutely. When your child signs on for tutoring, they will use a link that is specific to their session. You can use that same link to drop in any time you would like. I do suggest muting your microphone to not disturb the lesson that is in progress. I can also record your child’s online math tutoring session upon request so that you can re-watch it at your convenience. I always provide weekly recap emails with notes on our tutoring session, my observations, and future plans to ensure you’re in the loop.
Q: Can my Kindergartener or First Grader do online tutoring?
I do have young students who participate in online math tutoring. Though online tutoring is simple and easy to use, some kindergarteners and first graders might struggle with mouse or keyboard skills needed. It’s up to you whether you think your child has the skills and focus to learn from online tutoring. I suggest scheduling a free consultation call to discuss your child’s math needs, computer skills, and whether online math tutoring would be a good fit for them.
Q: How often should my child meet with a math tutor?
Most students benefit from weekly online math tutoring sessions, which allows consistent progress while fitting into busy family schedules. Weekly sessions provide enough time between meetings for students to practice concepts while maintaining momentum in their learning. Some students working to close significant learning gaps or homeschooling may benefit from twice-weekly sessions. For students who need occasional support rather than weekly instruction, my flex package allows you to schedule sessions as needed. During your free consultation, we'll discuss the frequency that best matches your child's needs and your goals.
Q: My child has had bad experiences with teachers and tutors in the past, how will you handle this?
I understand that students have had bad, and sometimes traumatic, experiences throughout their education. As a kid who experienced some of these things myself, I try to be extremely sensitive to your child’s needs and experiences. Please let me know about your child’s bad experiences and their specific needs during your consultation call. This allows me to know where your child is coming from and what I can do to help them feel at ease and find success.
Q: We had a bad experience with online school. Is this any different?
Most families say that online math tutoring is NOTHING like virtual school. The one-on-one interaction between tutor and child allows for much more engagement and better learning outcomes. I have 10+ years experience in ensuring that your child is engaged, learning, and enjoying themselves for the whole session. I suggest that you set up a 30-minute trial session to see firsthand how online math tutoring works and how your child reacts to it.
Q: I'm worried about my child's attention span and online tutoring. How do you handle this?
Many parents come to me with the concern that their child won't be able to focus during an online tutoring session. There are a few things I do to help your child have a great online tutoring experience.
-
First, I make sure to use engaging activities and topics that cater to your child's interests.
-
Second, I can adjust the tutoring schedule to two 30-minute tutoring sessions instead of one 60 minute session per week. This schedule works well for students who have trouble with attention or are in younger grades.
A trial session is a great way to see how well your child can focus during online math tutoring. Contact me today to get one set up.
Q: Do you work with students who have math anxiety?
Absolutely. As someone who experienced severe math anxiety as a child, I understand how overwhelming math can feel. Many of my students come to me with low math confidence and the belief that they’re ‘bad at math’. I use evidence-based approaches to rebuild math confidence while filling learning gaps. This includes teaching students about neuroplasticity, mistakes as learning, and growth mindset. Parents often report that reducing math anxiety and rebuilding math confidence is the most valuable outcome of our tutoring sessions.
Q: Can you help with Common Core math?
Yes! Many parents reach out specifically for help understanding Common Core math methods. I specialize in teaching the 'why' behind Common Core approaches like area models, number lines, and decomposition strategies. While these methods look different from traditional algorithms, they build deeper mathematical understanding. I help students learn these methods effectively and parents understand what their child is being taught in school.
Q: Can you help my child catch up in math?
Yes, helping students fill learning gaps and catch up to grade-level is one of my specialities. I will take the information you have, classwork, and informal assessments of your child’s math skills to customize lesson plans to help reach their math goals. I keep a record of state math standards that your child has mastered and plan lessons to give them support on the core concepts they need to learn to catch up.
Q: What if my child is ahead in math?
I work with advanced students too! For students ahead of grade level, I provide enrichment and extension activities to keep them challenged and engaged. This might include deeper exploration of current concepts, introduction to advanced topics, or math games and puzzles that develop problem-solving skills. We can accelerate their learning or deepen their understanding depending on your goals.
Q: Do you work with homeschool families?
Yes! I love working with homeschool families. Check out this homeschool FAQ page for more information on how I help homeschool families with their math education goals.
